Dirk Daelemans - Principal investigator
Dirk Daelemans is a molecular (cell) biologist with broad expertise in virology and oncology. He graduated as Master in Biosciences Engineering at the KU Leuven followed by a PhD in virology at the Laboratory of Virology and Chemotherapy headed by Prof Erik De Clercq. He continued his scientific career as a BAEF fellow and NIH Fogarty postdoc fellow at the NCI/NIH (MD, USA). He is currently appointed as fulltime Professor at the KU Leuven and co-teaches Methods in Biomedical Research in the Bachelor program of Biomedical Sciences as well as in the Research Tracks Microbiology, Oncology and Molecular Cell Biology of the Master program. He is also chair of a permanent Thesis Advisory Committee of the Doctoral School Biomedical Sciences.
His research has been focused on the nucleocytoplasmic transport of the mammalian cell, a process essential for cellular homeostasis, but also for virus replication and cancer. He started his research career as a PhD student on nucleocytoplasmic transport in the context of HIV. He is a pioneer in the field of drug discovery against this process as he discovered an important class of drug-like inhibitors of the exportin 1 (XPO1) mediated nuclear export process. Although discovered against viruses, these XPO1 inhibitors have important potential for the treatment of cancer and that is how he and his research team gained expertise in oncology. The XPO1 inhibitors were licensed to Karyopharm Therapeutics (Newton, MA) which further developed them into the clinical drug selinexor that is currently nearly globally accessible to patients for the treatment of multiple myeloma or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. For the validation of the mechanism of action of this new class of inhibitors the lab utilized CRISPR technology and is now applying the technology in all its flavors.
Outside the lab Dirk spends time with his family, loves swimming and farming, and breeds jumping horses.
Lotte Bral - Lab manager
Hello, I’m Lotte. As the group’s lab manager, I help keep the various labs running. If anyone needs help, they can always come and knock on my door (if I had one 😊). I assist researchers and PhD students with the practical development of their experiments. I was there from the start in 2004 and am proud of how our lab has evolved over the years.
Eva Libaers - Lab technician
Hello, I’m Eva! I have a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology and I recently joined the Daelemans group as a lab technician. I contribute to the lab by helping the researchers and PhD students on the practical side of their experiments.
Maarten Jacquemyn - Senior scientist
Hello, I’m Maarten. I obtained my Master’s in Biochemical Engineering Technology in 2011 and that same year I joined the Daelemans lab. With a focus on CRISPR technology, I’ve facilitated it’s implementation in our lab since 2013. I’ve been actively involved in managing our CRISPR platform, implementing new CRISPR technologies and offering expertise and support for our internal research and external collaborations.Â
Jim Baggen - Postdoc
Hi, I’m Jim. After doing a PhD in molecular virology, I joined the Daelemans lab in 2018. I mainly study the interplay of various viruses with their host cell, particularly their interaction with cellular receptors. I also develop new CRISPR-based genetic screening strategies, with potential applications in both cancer and virus research.
Tim Dierckx - Postdoc
Hey hey! I’m a postdoctoral research associate providing bioinformatics and statistical expertise to the group, and I officially joined the lab in 2022. I firmly believe that a good researcher understands all aspects of their project, and so my passion is teaching our students about the finer points of the analysis tools they use.
Els Vanstreels - Postdoc
I hold a PhD in Applied Biological Sciences (KU Leuven) and joined the Daelemans lab in 2006 where my expertise lies in diverse imaging-based applications. My current research focuses on the development of morphological profiling techniques for cancer drug target deconvolution. Besides that, I am involved in and support diverse other research projects from our group.
Yannick Aerts - PhD student
Hi, I’m Yannick! I graduated in Bioscience Engineering at the KU Leuven in 2022, after which I joined the Daelemans lab as a PhD student. Here, I intend to unravel the virus-host interactions for a number of viruses with epidemic potential through CRISPR-based genetic screening.
Tine Deconinck - PhD student
Hello! I graduated in Biomedical Sciences at the KU Leuven in 2020. I did my master’s thesis in the Daelemans lab and decided to pursue my career here as a PhD student. I am working on oncolytic virotherapy as a treatment strategy for glioblastoma. The aim of my project is to provide the building blocks for a better efficacy through personalization, unravelling of resistance mechanisms and a multi-viral approach. [FWO fellow]
Bert Kwanten - PhD student
Building on my background in bioscience engineering, I gained a broad interest in CRISPR genome editing technology, in particular CRISPR chemogenetic screening. I put this technology into use for cancer drug target deconvolution and understanding mechanisms of drug resistance.
Ruth Lannoo - PhD student
Hi I’m Ruth. I completed my Master’s in Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven in 2020 and conducted my master’s thesis in the Daelemans lab. Currently, I’m pursuing a PhD within this research group focused on the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT) pathway. My goal is to identify novel ALT-essential factors for potential therapeutic applications in a tumor-agnostic ALT-targeting therapy. [FWO fellow]
Brecht Permentier - PhD student
Hi, I’m Brecht! I recently started my PhD in the Daelemans lab, after graduating as a Bioscience Engineer from KU Leuven in 2023. My project will combine two of my greatest interests: cancer research and gene editing. I will focus on the target identification of novel anticancer drugs, mainly through the geneation of drug-resistant cells using the CRISPR-Cas technology.Â
Jolien Timmermans - PhD student
Hi, I’m Jolien! I obtained my Master’s thesis in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at KU Leuven 2020. The main focus of my PhD project is to identify novel mechanisms of kinase inhibitor resistance in cancer using CRISPR. The aim is to provide new knowledge about genes and mutation sites involved in resistance in order to discover biomarkers and new potential targets for combating therapy resistance.
Janne Van Hauwenhuyse - PhD student
Hi, I’m Janne! I graduated as a master in Biomedical Sciences in 2019 and have been a PhD student in the Daelemans lab ever since. My research is focuses on the identification and development of novel treatment strategies for glioblastoma, through in-vivo mouse studies and CRISPR-based genetic screening.Â
Kim Janssens - Lab technician
